What is
Biochar?

Biochar is a natural, charcoal-based soil amendment made by heating wood and plant matter in low-oxygen conditions. The result is a fine-grained, porous, long-lasting organic substrate — essentially a sponge buried beneath your soil.

Inside millions of tiny pores, water and nutrients cling to reactive surfaces instead of washing away. Beneficial bacteria and fungi colonize those pores permanently, building the living root zone your plants need to thrive.

Unlike compost that breaks down each season, biochar endures in your soil for hundreds of years — a one-time investment in permanent soil health.

"Some of the world's most fertile soils — the midwestern American prairie — contain 40–50% carbon from thousands of years of natural fires. We replicate that process in every container."

Six Reasons Your Garden Needs Biochar

One amendment. Permanent results. Better soil from the root up.

01

Retains Water

Porous structure holds water like a sponge, releasing it slowly to roots. Critical for Montana's dry summers and container gardens.

02

Holds Nutrients

Charged surfaces bind nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace minerals — keeping them in the root zone instead of leaching away.

03

Supports Microbes

Tiny pores create ideal habitat for bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms that help plants absorb nutrients and resist disease.

04

Improves Structure

Breaks up clay, prevents compaction, aerates dense soils. A natural replacement for perlite, peat moss, and vermiculite.

05

Long-Lasting Results

Unlike compost that breaks down seasonally, biochar stays active for hundreds of years. Apply once, benefit forever.

06

Carbon-Negative

Every container sequesters carbon that would otherwise return to the atmosphere. Gardening that actively helps the climate.

Three Steps to Better Soil

01

Mix Into Soil

Incorporate 10–20% biochar by volume into your planting mix. Work into the top 6–12 inches of raised beds, or mix directly into potting soil for containers.

02

Water Normally

Plant and water as usual. Biochar begins absorbing and holding moisture immediately. Most gardeners find they water noticeably less often within the first season.

03

Watch Plants Thrive

Stronger root zones produce more vigorous plants. Expect better yields, improved disease resistance, and reduced watering — this season and every season after.

Made in Missoula, Montana

Bitterroot Biochar started with a simple observation: Montana soil is tough. Dry summers, cold winters, and alkaline prairie soil challenge even seasoned gardeners. The answer wasn't more fertilizer — it was rebuilding the soil itself.

Using a flame curtain kiln and sustainably sourced wood, we produce small-batch biochar right here in the Missoula Valley. Then we blend it with biodynamic compost, worm castings, compost tea, organic fertilizer, clay minerals, and rock powders — a complete soil ecosystem in every container.

You'll find us at local farmers markets, talking soil science with home gardeners and homesteaders. Every container is mixed by hand and tested in real Montana gardens.

"My raised bed tomatoes were the best I've ever grown. Mixed in one container at planting and barely had to water through July. The plants looked healthier all season long."

"I run a small greenhouse and biochar changed how I think about growing media. Less watering, stronger roots, stopped losing seedlings to root rot. Buy two containers at a time now."

"Skeptical at first — seemed like a lot for a quart of black stuff. But my flower garden has never looked this good. Soil drains better but holds moisture longer. I'm not going back."
